Let’s Go Back and Forth Group Child Care Game

What you'll need: You and your toddlers and time to play

Before you begin:
  • Talk with your students about the game you will play; a game called “Back and Forth.

  • Try this!
  • Sit on the floor, in a circle with all toddlers facing the center, with legs apart.

  • Hold each others hands and alternate leaning back and forth, one toddler will lead forward and the next back

  • Alternate rocking back and forward, with every other toddler going forward or back

  • Try to get a rhythm to your rocking as you say “back and forth,” “back and forth.”

Play “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”

  • Add variety to the game by singing a song as you go back and forth.
  • Try singing this familiar song

Row, row, row your boat
Gently down the stream.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a dream.



Name: Let's Go Back and Forth

Children: 1 or more

Ages: 18 months to 36 months

Place: Indoors in a large room or outside on grass or pavement

Equipment: None!


This is a great group child care activy and it really creates a bond between toddlers and their caregiver.   Share this game with your students parents and tell them how much you and their child enjoyed this activity.

Offer to show your toddlers parents how the game is played, if they are not familiar with the classic game called Let's go back and forth
