Sharks in the Water
Sharks in the Water is similar to Co-operative Musical Chairs. If playing the game indoors, mark
the floor with a large square using masking tape or something similar. Outdoor game players could
use chalk to mark the play area on concrete or black top play surface. The square play area is the
safe island and its surroundings is the ocean. To start the game play music and instruct the children
to "swim" around the island. Randomly stop the music and tell the children that when the music stops
there are dangerous sharks coming! All the children should then retreat fast to the island or safe area.
After each round, make the "safe" island smaller and smaller. Using the co-operation skills they learned
in Co-operative Musical Chairs, your students must learn how to fit all their classmates in the square
as it becomes too small. This is another great game to have the children learn to work together and
make sure everyone has a safe place away from the sharks!

Sharks in the Water is a great way to teach basic interaction and co-operation. Since no-one is left
out after each round, it also keeps all the children engaged during play.
